my classroom management philosophy
My classroom guidelines are based upon positive relationships and a positive learning environment. This means that any behavior which hinders personal learning, another student’s learning, or behavior which undermines any individual’s dignity has no place in the classroom. One motto for my classroom will be “Discover self through knowledge. Nurture self in safety.” I will always strive to model the expectations I have for students, to provide a safe and comfortable environment, and to exemplify the standards of respect I expect within my classroom; in turn, I will ask that students always strive to model these standards as well. I believe classroom management should be proactive rather than reactive, and I will draw largely on humanistic and choice theory approaches in my classroom. I recognize the need to maintain a student’s self-concept, and will respond to a misbehaving student with patience, fairness, and consistency. Ultimately, through mutual respect and positive relationships, I believe many potential issues can be avoided; when situations do arise, each individual will be treated respectfully and as a unique, responsible individual whose best interests are always my first priority.
